Why Louise Loves Oak Street

I am so excited to welcome Louise to the Only On Oak blog team! For her first story I thought it would be nice for you to hear why Louise loves Oak Street!

I love Oak Street because it’s a wonderful, old-fashioned community in which to raise our son. We enjoy walking up and down the strip almost every day and chatting with the merchants and neighbors, most of whom greet us by name. It’s lovely to drop in at Oak Street Cafe to hear Charles play piano while we brunch. Visiting Liz and Kitty Meow (the shop cat) at Blue Cypress is always fun and it’s earned us a great children’s library at home.

We do almost all of our shopping on Oak to support our community. With toddler birthday parties to attend several times a month, being able to stroll over to Haase’s to buy wooden toys or to Skip & Whistle for tiny custom t-shirts beats the heck out of ordering plastic stuff online.

I could go on and on about the restaurants; but to sum it up: If you want a choice of great burger destinations, a choice of cafes, fresh squeezed juice, fresh baked bread and pastries, perfect BBQ, an ice cream cone and a hotdog, alligator cheesecake and paneed rabbit, yummy and unique cocktails or a fool-proof wine list… well, you can find it all on Oak.

And to boot, it’s rather nice to have a Grammy winning artist (and all kinds of fabulous acts) play weekly around the corner from your home. Oak Street is New Orleans’ best local secret and my favorite place to live. - Louise Fenton
